This is probably my last post until after Christmas so I'll leave you with this to mull over:
When the old Rangers club went defunct and replaced by Sevco Inc. every pundit in the media rushed to tell us how this would be a disaster for the Scottish game and that Sevco should be rushed into the SPL as soon as possible, but the last couple of years of their absence has only gone to show how little we do need them. Year on year the league has only grown more competitive and this year we're on Christmas and there's still 5 clubs that could conceivably win the title, albeit Celtic are still strong favourites.
I'd say that give it another two years without Sevco and the league would be completely open.
The demise of Rangers was not bad for the Scottish game; it was great for the Scottish game and if Sevco would go extinct too we could be on the verge of a golden era.
Merry Christmas. :/

The argument the opening poster makes is equally applicable to Celtic.
Scottish football 'needs' no team. That's a fact. The top division has been a breath of fresh air without Rangers, and frankly it would be the same without Celtic too.
However, there's a lot to be said for a Scottish Premier League where Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, United and Rangers and Celtic are all strong.
Football goes in cycles so this is unlikely to ever be the case where all teams are competing, but it's plain daft to say Scottish football is better off with 3 big clubs in the Championship.
I'd rather Aberdeen were doing well with Rangers, Hearts and Hibs all in the league. If those clubs got their act together then it'd make it harder for Celtic and theoretically make it easier for others to sustain a title challenge.
As it is, I'm hopeful my team can keep Celtic in check over the next couple of months until we play them again and at least make a go of it this year.

genuine contenders for honours
you lost a cup tie to a fairly average Dundee side
you are in with a better than even money chance of progressing to the final of the league cup but your record of winning one semi in a blue moon suggests you wont
Then there's the league when did you last have an unbeaten run in double figures
As for Europe lets not even bother going there
Aberdeen have been competitive in the cups for a few seasons now. Losing to Dundee was the exception to this rule.Originally Posted by eastcoastscot
I don't have the facts to hand, but I think we went unbeaten for two long spells last season - whether they were for 10 or more games I don't know. You'll note I haven't said we're title challengers yet - in fact I'm quite explicit about that.
What was wrong with what we did in Europe this season? We crushed a team we should have beaten, we beat a decent Dutch side and we gave a Spanish team that had been in the Champions League the

Well said, we need the big clubs to be strong but it is interesting to have diddies like Hamilton and Ict doing well, both should be top six sides. I'm not fussed if the Rangers and Celtic are weak tbh would rather have a strong wee club like Patrick thistle or DundeeOriginally Posted by afc_1983

I liked the rest of your post, as well, even if I didn't quite agree with all of it. I've become more militant, I suspect, and simply want both Rangers and Celtic out of the Scottish game for good (although I realise the chances of this happening are the slim side of anorexic). Nice to read a considered post here, though, thanks.
