    Respect

43 years ago today there were thousands of fans excited about going to cheer their teams in the local derby, sadly 66 never came home to their loved ones, we all like banter and when you reflect back to that tragedy it makes you wonder about some of the bitterness on here at times.

Have a good new year and may you always come back from the game safe.

    The Ibrox Disaster

New Year Bells had been ringing,
    All of Scotland was singing,
    The old year had died,
And the new had been born.
    As the news of disaster
    From Ibrox came spreading,
    The news that would cause
    A whole nation to mourn

Two great goals had been scored,
    In the last dying moments.
    Jimmy Johnstone for Celtic,
    For Rangers’ young Stein.
    Their supporters all cheered them,
    With voices of t***der,
Unknowing what waited on staircase 13

    66 people died
Some in flower of their manhood,
    When the fences gave way
    And the barriers bent,
Seasoned Glasgow policemen their faces all tearstained,
With brave efforts, endeavoured far worse to prevent.
    All of Glasgow enjoined,
For the first time in history.
In the Glasgow cathedral no Billys, no Dans
But the Old Firm united to pray for their victims,
Of a tragedy set in the memory of man.

New Year Bells had been ringing,
    All of Scotland was singing,
    The old year had died,
And the new had been born.
    As the news of disaster
    From Ibrox came sprea

I think was Lisbon was getting at was the kind of Rangers 'fans' in The Main Stand at Ibrox that I witnessed from The Broamloan Road Stand a few years back who throughout a silence were filming Celtic fans whilst waving tea towels of The Queen and King Billy before venting their bile at Jock Stein a man who tended to the injured and dying that fateful day.

    Sad stuff.
