    Charlie Hebdo

Regardless of the danger, is it really right to deliberately offend the religious sensibilities of 1.6 billion people just to sell a magazine and make a profit? Many people of all faiths take their religions extremely seriously (I think it's a crock, but that is another matter) and I simply see no reason why this publication feels the need to mock a religious figure in the full knowledge that it is extremely upsetting to all Muslims.
I have no issue with free speech, but should a wee bit of restraint not be shown in some circumstances?
People were quite happy to condemn Fred Phelps and his 'God hates fags' brigade protesting at people's funerals, but this magazine is getting a pat on the back for seriously and deliberately offending many, many more people.
    Is it right?

At the risk of being called intolerant or bigoted for my viewpoint, I think it is right. For 2 reasons.

I think you're singling out their mocking of the prophet and over analysing it John.

Charlie Hebdo mock everybody and everything. They are known for it in France I believe.

The fact that just one group has been offended so much as to attack them is the sticking point; its a moot point that it was Islamic Extremists.

And because one group of people are offended, we should now stop all publications from offending everyone, or just the ones who go mental and start shooting cartoonists, is that what you're saying?

I have read, seen and heard many things which offended me in the past, and if I hear, read or see stuff that offends me in the future, I'll just do what I did previously; laughed it off.

I dont think I will ever agree with the curtailing of freedom of speech. Millions of people died for our right to it, we would be doing them a gross discourtesy if we started curtailing it here in this and any other free country.

And what happens if another religion starts to develop similar themes? There were major schisms in the Orthodox Church in Constantinople in the 11-1200s about whether drawings of Christ, God etc, were acceptable or not. If this came back do we then have to take down all our pictures of Christ in case we **** them off too?

Brethren folk dinna like seeing women with uncovered hair, do we cover all our women's heads too? What do we do about religious folk who are offended by gay folk, who in turn are offended by the religious folks offended-ness? Do we banish the gays AND the anti-gays, just to make sure that no-one can be offended?

Be sure, if you start down this road you'll never be done, ever. There's always someone more offended than you are! Just look at the OF song book tit for tat that's developed over recent years.

I get offended by all sorts of things, Netanyahu and Erdogan at a march for press freedom was one doozy recently, along with barbaric ****holes killing folk for dra
