I agree but it's a shame. The FA Cup seems to be picking up again this year and I'm pleased. I've always loved the cup competitions.Originally Posted by Bob_Lazar

The FA Cup and the other Cup competition are just a distraction from the importance of the Premier league, all i want is 3 points against Swansea next Saturday so we can maintain 3rd spot, the annoying thing about these cup competitions are the feckin injuries picked up by our squad, and what for? a couple of cup competitions that nobody gives a feck about anymore bar Pompey fans of course so screw the Cup and just get the points instead !

I would've loved to have seen us progress, hopefully get to the final, have a cracking day out in the smoke and hopefully win the bloody thing.
The only silver lining is that some of our rivals are still in and have extra games to play/injuries/suspensions to worry about.
Well said Pents. Although I have said on other posts that in my opinion if we should qualify for Europe it would be a great achievement, there is nothing like a cup run.
May 76' of course, but, The Paint Pot Final ... what a day, I think my favourite in all the years following Saints. Fantastic atmosphere and I was there mob handed with my family which made it special.
I do not normally subscribe to the 'Just a distraction' club. But i think this year it is true. Think about this...we go on a cup run and god knows even win it, but suffer league form drop off and come in 6th. Europa league money is feck all really, so another distraction we can do without next season.
BUT, concentrate this season on finishing third, go into the CL for real, not via the play offs/qualification rounds that 4th place brings, and then reap the extra rewards of huge CL income. Not only will we be able to buy better players for a stronger cup run next season but also, maybe just maybe we can keep the likes of Toby and Morgan as we are already able to offer them CL football.
Finishing 3rd could change this clubs future for many years to come. Winning the cup is great for us fans, but does little to build on for next season.
Sadly the landscape has changed. Any of us in our thirties and older will remember the magic of the FA cup final, watching the build-up on Saturday morning telly then all gathering round the telly of whichever kids family had the biggest set. The players used to be bang up for it and it was treated as important as the league.
After Saturday's game, which I took my young niece to, we were at a family party. Another kid there, about 13 I'd guess, responded to her boast of going to the game with something like "pfff, it's only the FA Cup, it doesn't matter".
Sadly I think players, managers and the money men have a similar mindset these days.![]()
The fact of the matter is that the FA Cup is a distraction, whether we like it or not.
Point well made.Originally Posted by st_bangkok

Yes Proc i too like the Cup competitions, but i am getting such a kick out of Southampton fc being taken seriously for once and mentioned in the same breath as Chelsea, Arsenal, Man city, Utd Spurs, Liverpool ect ect, that i don't want that to stop, it seems every weekend we are on the tele and our expose has never been greater, people up and down the Country are talking about us for once without the usual sniggers including the so called tv pundits and do you know what...it feels absolutely brilliant...better than a once in a lifetime flash in the pan cup win...just my opinion but that's what these forums are for...Europe here we come !
How do Pukks, have you lumped anything on Saints this season?
How do pents, see you have worked out the Pukka identity thing thenanyway i did not put a bean on Saints this year because like so many other people i expected us to get toasted during this season, how wrong were we ffs,
anyway i am starting to study Horse racing in preparation for the start of the Flat season so that i can bash the Bookies again... Information is King !
