    virgil van dijk

Interesting to note that since he has been at Celtic Park in 67 domestic games he has received 4 yellow cards and 1 red card.
In 19 European games he has received 7 yellow cards and 1 red card.

Obviously there are a number of possible reasons for this:

    1. European referees are stricter than their scottish counterparts.

    2. His ability against the far inferior players allows him to stroll through domestic games and he does not have to commit himself in tackles.

    3. On a couple of occasions last year he should have been red carded and wasn't, is there a reluctance on the part of referees in Scotland to book and send off players from the so called bigger clubs.

    1. Yes they are.

    2. Correct.

    3. There is some truth in this, although it's not just in Scotland this happens.

Hmm... quite a limited offering here really which probably misses the actual reason why this occurs.
I'll let you think a little more...

With regards to point 3 then, do you think that in the european arena Celtic are seen as the smaller team and as a consequence are subject to the same experiences as smaller teams in the Scottish game and they do not get the decisions in Europe that they might expect to get domestically.
