Does anyone get the impression that this young man is embarrassed by the attention he is receiving as if what he did was not extraordinary, the sign of a true Hero. The second member of his family to receive this honour.

This is the same of most who are awarded in this way, it's a job we do (did in my case) we do the training, we do the job and if we're unlucky enough to have to deploy those skills to the max and more then the awards come. Nobody expects them and those that receive them suffer a little embarrassment at them, but make no bones about it they are richly deserved. Joshua Leakey is a true hero.

Maybe another reason for playing it down a bit? Not sure I blame any particular society, celebrity status attracts all sorts of people with strange ideas.

I think PF is being a bit modest too. Not everyone can handle even the training and no amount of 'real life' exercise can ever truly say how you will respond when it happens for real. Well deserved.
