I’m not one bit surprised at the poll TBH, the level of brainwashing in this country is quite astonishing.

We have had years of drip drip drip feeding of propaganda from both Labour and SNP governments of how the earth is going to spin off its axis if we don’t put a stop to all this vile behaviour by “Neanderthals” and “knuckle draggers”. For some reason, there hasn’t been the same volume and level of disdain directed at those who carry knives, beat up and rob OAPs and burgle houses. You would be forgiven for thinking football was once a peaceful and tranquil hobby akin to an afternoon’s croquet on the lawn and now suddenly besieged with baying hordes of pitch fork wielding cave men. But no, those of us who remember football 30-40 years ago know it is now a Quaker’s peace convention by comparison.

But therein lies the problem. Plod has to justify its large presence inside and outside the ground. And against a backdrop of falling real crime rates, the middle class jobs in police and

IMO the act was brought about by people wanting to be seen to be dealing with an actual problem. The actual problem was large numbers of *****and Tims stuck in the 17th century who couldn't stop themselves abusing each other in sectarian terms (****** this, Orange that etc). This was anything from the massed choirs in the stands through to sectarian abuse (and worse) on the streets. Be in no doubt this WAS a problem (and still is to an extent).

In some ways, it has worked, in many others it has not. The police will still never, ever enter a stand with x thousand folk singing bigoted songs to arrest anyone. They will nab the odd bam here and there, but that's about it. They ARE however more likely to nab bams in the street, people know this and this could be said to be having an effect on general levels of sectarian abuse, if not on the massed bigot choirs. It also sent out a signal about what kind of country we are, one that does not tolerate sectarian behavior. This had a benefit too

He got as far as the middle of the second line.
