Heard (unconfirmed)that SD had said we could match neither length of contract nor the wage offered by Shrewsbury to Matt Tootle (2 years I understand?)

Was this actually said? I hope not! If its correct then the club statements re wanting him to stay were basically lies? He was surely never going to sign a one year contract

I don't know how much truth there is in this rumour but if it is correct there is something very seriously wrong with either the club or the manger or both.
Matt was club captain aged twenty four and had been at the club as a regular first teamer for several years but could not be given a two year contract...seems very strange to me.
If we are not able to match the wages of Shrewsbury we don't deserve to be in Div 1.
I fear for my beloved Alex.

Not quite sure what the fuss is all about and I'm not sure why we need 3 right backs. Obviously SD doesn't think that Baille is ready to play a whole season yet, but given another year he probably will and SD sees Turton as more of a fullback and Turton has proved he can play there. I liked Tootle, but we are in the enviable position of having cover for the right back position and losing him does not in my opinion weaken the team significantly and frees up his wages to use elsewhere.

I'm not surprised he was offered a better deal at Shrewsbury as Shrewsbury have a much bigger budget, they have directors who put money into the club, our biggest shareholder on the board is more likely to take money out of the club. However, its midfield players and a left back that we need more.

Also I read a report that Tootle was angered by supporters at the Alex over his illness last year, after negative social media messages were posted online, what part, I wonder, did that play over his decision

Don't really disagree with you much

Players move on and take the best offer as they see things

...but that's not the point here. Its not about how many right backs we have or their relative merits. Its the very strong "we want Matt to stay" public statements that just cannot be squared with the contract offer the club are rumoured to have made

If the reports are correct the club are just taking the p*** when they comment in the media. They would be better putting out no comments on their supposed ambitions rather than talking utter c***p!!!

There are NO mixed messages. We will allow any player to leave that is on top money for us which means its about half of what most clubs pay and SD has already said we will go with what we have and supplement that with loan players that HE thinks was the key to us staying in L1 whilst conveniently forgetting we lost the last game and relied on others to do that. Great strategy that paid dividends hey?

I will hi jack this thread with the same message. IF as reported by others here it costs us 750,000 pounds now for Cat2 academy status with no benefit to the club (ie where is it since we started Cat2?) then the obvious answer is to downgrade it to Cat3 and we can save 600,000 pounds in the process WITHOUT it affecting both the kids intake from the local area and any 'coaching' they would get. IF Cat2 was that successful how come we needed so many loan players and most of the others not up to standard?

When it comes to Players Contracts Remember Dave Brammer when he left Crewe it was reported that he left because he was only offered a 1 year Contract? when Dave was interviewed by Radio Stoke he said " He was not offered a contact at all" Amazing!!! so dont be surprised about Tootle.Lets see what he says??

Toots signed a 2yr deal with Shrewsbury mate, so by deduction I would say we only offered him 1yr.

I'm getting very concerned about next season already!

What’s there to be worried about? With a former manager who having had unrivaled success had to be removed from his position before he took us out of the league, a former scout with very close ties to the mighty Leek and a plethora of former players, a fitness coach who obviously on last season’s performances doesn’t quite understand the role of fitness coach all on the bench all now giving their two pence worth each week in the press and at each game, what could possibly go wrong?

The Alex must have one of the top paid back rooms in the lower leagues, surely that’s why we all pay the entrance fee and buy the merchandise, to see the great talent standing by the touchline and sitting in their blue seats all shouting their opinion at those poorly paid plebes, who for some reason just don’t seem to be able to win a game for some reason?
