    Where Do I Start?

Firstly... Well done Pompey. Showed a lot more passion and desire and deserved to be in the pot for the next round.

Positives.. Carson will start now, Grant has too many errors under his belt. All keepers make mistakes but he is on his own in the keeper calamity league now.

Thorne is back and absolutely crucial to us.. We showed nothing until he came on. He looks none the worse from last seasons injury.

Sass*********anmbo or whatever the spelling is.. Must start as RB now. I like this lad.

Shacks.. Thank god he is back!

Negatives and things the coaching staff need to sort asap.
I am not going to pick on individuals, it's early days still for the coach and the team.

Tempo.. FFS, we are so slow even on the counter. I could put an academy team of U18s out against us and they would be able to get back and in shape against us.. I even went to the bog on one counter attack and still got back in before we had reached the half way line. 2 games in and it's been the same on b

    Agree with all that Angry.

Except the touchline bit. Histrionics from the technical area make no difference whatsoever. Stay calm. Analyse. Replace. Adjust.

Only problem last night was Clement had no options to adjust with.

We are clearly 2 or 3 midfielders short now.

I'm not convinced we have the correct personnel for 4231, and now the diamond is impossible without Hughes and Bryson.

    Over to Mel.

Agree. We were very quick to recruit early on but it all seems to have gone very flat.

Thankfully, we will never see that team take the field again!

    re: Where Do I Start?

I'm not saying he has to be a demented fool on the line, there is some middle ground here.. I watched him closely last night and there was nothing coming from him really. It would be nice to see him giving some sort of direction during the game... Even some praise might not be a bad thing from the line?

I don't know the guy but first impressions are that he seems to want to keep a distance between himself and the team. Some coaches / Managers are like that as they feel it's easier to make tough decisions etc. I have never really like that approach to be honest. I am more for a we are all in this together, it's us against them style.

What do you do as a manager if you see something not working? Wait till half time to address it or try and change something now? Half time or full time might be too late.

I like it. Cold and calculated. Take the emotion out of the situation.

Let me ask you a question. Did you ever see Brian Clough waving his arms around during a game, or screaming instructions from the sidelines?

    Never.

They are highly skilled professional footballers.

If the manager is waving his arms around like a ********* screaming instructions it means he's lost control, or he hasn't got his ideas across to his players, or he hasn't got intelligent enough players.

It isn't necessary! If you look back at all the disaster performances from the McClaren era, you would've seen McClaren doing air traffic control. It makes no difference and gives out the signal that you've lost control.

Angry, you're a Keegan man. I'd love it etc.

There are plenty of examples where cold and calculated does not work.. Yes and examples where it maybe does.. Again you are talking about extremes with Keegan and Clough...

Highly skilled professional footballers? Hmmm Yes we had some experience out there but also some youth who will need instruction. Game plans don't always go to plan my friend. Changes need to be made.. Do you think all 10 outfield players are on the same wavelength and will all know how to adjust as a unit? I ahve also met some really think footballers.. I kid you not!!
Again you say screaming instructions.. You have picked an extreme example.. Did you never see Sir Alex getting agitated on the line? Calm most of the time but not opposed to waving his arms about on occasion.

If this style works for PC, then fine I will not complain. It was just an observation that he was very quiet when I though the team needed to change some things and need his guidance from the line. I certainly felt they were looking to h

Ferguson rarely shouted instructions to players.

He liked to get his views across to the referee though!

BC might be an extreme example, but I reckon it's not a bad role model to follow.

As I have said on other threads, we haven't seen the best team take the field for more than 45 mins (possibly only 10!) so we need reserve judgement and put things into perspective.

I'm waiting until at least half-time against Charlton before I start unfurling my "Clement Out" banner!

    re: Where Do I Start?

Actually the BC scenario is interesting. Different times I know but how would he have coped in todays game where players rule? We live in the time of the prima donna, who spits the dummy out at the slightest slur.

Clough would have been banging his head against a brick wall. His antics would be deemed unacceptable in this day and age. Some politically correct moron could call it bullying. So should we follow that role model?

Capello had that aloof approach and yes I suppose you could say he had some success in his career but also a lot of failure.

I don't think BC would work nowadays just like Keegan also does not work.

Everyone has their style and each will work in certain situations.

It's a difficult job that's for sure. Everyone knew PC was a risk but I still back that 100%. Even if it fails I doff my hat to Rush and co for having the nads to go down this road.

    re: Where Do I Start?

I think the 'changes in times' argument is a flawed and pointless debate.

Good management knows when to use a certain style to get a result.

Second game of the season, with a mixture of kids, reserves and new signings isn't the time to be ranting and raving on the touchline.

He would've looked like a moron who had lost the plot.

Second half of extra time at the Wembley play off in May, and I expect him to be a up and down like a demented David Pleat/Neil Warnock hybrid.
