    How the game has changed!

I started supporting Derby County in the late 40's. By this time of year the goalmouth at BBG & all other clubs was a mud patch with a few buckets of sawdust in that area. On a rainy day the old leather ball, with lacing to contain the bladder was more like a medicine ball as it really soaked up moisture. There was only one match ball and if it went high in the stands the play stopped until it was returned. Scouting teams we were going to play was infrequent I am sure, as it would mean someone travelling by bus or train. The fans back then supported the club without question, and the only discussion on the pros & cons of the players would take place in the local pub. The only feedback we would get would be the DET. There were no games on the "Telly", (If you had one) & everyone sat glued to the wireless (as it was called) to hear the football results at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday's.
Few stadiums had floodlights, so night games were a non-entity. When a player went down on the pitch the tra

When I stared going in 1955 it was 9 old pence in the boys enclosure, 3d for a programe and a couple of pence to leave your bike in one of the alleyways between houses in Shaftsbuy Cresent. I used to love the smell of liniment coming off the players but didn't love the smell from Leys foundry. I used to go to watch the reserves so that I could see the half time scores next to the letters on the platform in the corner of the pop side. It was also good to stand with the away supporters and have some friendly banter. Half time way 10 minutes and that was it. Night matches were on a Wednesday and KO 7.30 which gave me time, after the game to run to the Loco Works to clock on as I worked permanent nights. As the chargehand was also a Rams supporter he used to let me off. You could talk to people around you before the match and at half time as they used to play records over the PA not blast you out with the row as now. But the great thing was the Baseball Ground. I feel sorry for those suppor
