A baggie i come in peace

no not jeremy .i was just thinking tonight, wasnt your biggest mistake over the last 4 years was by sacking Merlin Mick?me meself thinks so,4 years in the wilderness could it all have been avoided if you had kept faith with him?its like norwich and bournemouth now,if they drop i cant see them sh1tting on their managers and having a kneejerk reaction.sometimes you have to have a bit of faith dont you think?

No, it wasn't our biggest mistake 53. The timing within the season was odd but in my opinion he should have gone quite some time earlier. Don't forget we'd persevered with him for years (did he not see at least three or four WBA managers come and go?) having clearly - not just with the benefit of hindsight; many of us said it at the time - reached his endpoint, we still allowed him to keep us treading water for far too long and as you know, if you stand still in this game you go backwards.

His style in some ways set the template for our approach ever since, little or no creativity or inspiration. At least Mick instilled a work ethic although for me this generated more "heat" than "light"...he had to go. Having fannied about in making the decision to sack him, Instead of setting our stall out with a real statement of intent we settled into a rut, compounded by the biggest insult to the fans' intelligence and support I can remember; the appointment of Terry Connor. FFS!!!! more or l

I believe that our biggest error at the time was in not having an experienced manager to take over when MM was sacked. There was still enough time to possibly resurrect the season by bringing in someone with experience and the greater ability to regenerate our lads; TC was not up to the task. Four draws in the remaining13 games (4 out of a possible 39 pts) was a testimony to his limitations. True, Walter Smith, Alan Curbishley and Brian McDermott ruled themselves out of the running, but should they not have been canvassed before MM was sacked and Connor took over? Should a more credible and experienced candidate have been found, or failing that should we not have retained our present manager and then continued our search before throwing the baby out with the bath water??

No one will ever know now if Mick McCarthy would have kept Wolves up, i'm going to sound like a stuck record here yet again, 2 wins in 22 games was his downfall. There was a knee-jerk reaction after the defeat to sandwell town, but the actions of the owner in the 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool was the beginning of the end for Mick.
