theres no difference between the old european cup and todays champions league apart from the format and organisation of the tournament. which has changed several times over the years.
in the past, it was a competition where loads of clubs entered to see who would bed the best in europe. and its still that same situation today.
same with the world cup. that changes format regularly and has done over the years, but essentually tis a competition to find the worlds best international side no matter how the tournament is constructed.
