I doubt we can afford to pay him off, and I doubt he can afford, or wants to, accept a less than his full contract to be paid up if we cancel it. He's entitled to it all and he's not forced to get a new team to pay him the same wage (I imagine he'd have gone by now if anyone was prepared to pay him that).
His career has taken a **** already. He went to Birmingham and barely played, they didn't want him so we got him back. If he can't get into the side of one of the worst teams in the Championship, then League One beckons. Careers plummet so rapidly. Look at Maguire, from Mid-table championship regular (porkers) to League two - via us - in half a season.
If you were on a two year fixed term contract, would you let your Employer terminate it 18 months early without paying you up the full salary if you didn't have any offers of employment elsewhere? I doubt it. His career is already ruined at Championship level. He's 31, he's got bills to pay and his career has what 4 years left?
