    Gary Caldwell....

    Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell last night emerged as a surprise contender for the vacant position at Bolton Wanderers.

    Caldwell has flourished during his first full campaign as Latics manager, with an 18-match unbeaten run putting the club on the brink of promotion back to the Championship after a single season in League One.

    The 33-year-old, who also represented Wigan as a player between 2010 and 2015, is due to celebrate his 50th game in charge when they travel to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, but his long-term future at the DW Stadium has been thrown into doubt after a bust-up with chairman David Sharpe - grandson of former chairman Dave Whelan.

    Unconfirmed reports suggest Caldwell has serious reservations about Latics' summer move to Euxton, when he will be forced to uproot from the club's current Christopher Park training ground.
