Thread: Darren Wassall

    Darren Wassall

I thought it was time for a balanced appraisal of his tenure so far. 10 games played - surely enough time to make a reflective judgment? His record is W5, D1, L4. Home form is impressive. Losing 0-1 to MK Dons in his first game in charge after 3 days with the squad did not bode well, but since then, we have won 4 home games on the spin, with 8 goals scored and 0 goals conceded. Away from home, we have looked less impressive. The 3-1 win at Brentford was, by all accounts, rather fortuitous. The 3-3 draw at Rotherham was tragically comic. It had more in common with the latter days of Schteeve!! Our other 3 away games - all defeats - have a curious similarity; plenty of possession in each game, but slow build up play and few chances created. Hence, we lost 2-1 to both Cardiff and Wolves and 2-0 to QPR.

Overall, my view is that the jury is still out. We have played some very attractive football at home, especially against Hull, Huddersfield and Forest, and there is evidence of the flue

All fair comment imo Mazza and nice to see such objectivity. He certainly hasn't been the disaster that some suggest although I would rather see us start again next season with someone young, hungry, dynamic and with rather more experience.
Wassall's time may well come - many others have made much worse starts - but for now perhaps the best case scenario is for him to return to his former position at the end of the season and continue his 'education' within the club. Ultimately I don't think another 'rookie' appointment is currently in our longer term best interests.

I would say he has done no worse than other managers we have had, but its stretch to say the football has been attractive - Hull and the 80 mins against Rotherham saw the high tempo passing game maintained, in the other matches it was largely dross, negative, with only 20 mins or so worth watching, not thats any different to how we have payed this season.

How much influence has harry had?

Not the disaster (yet) that may have been expected, but we have yet to see consecutive games where the performance has been maintained.

Derby County Football Club can absolutely do much better than Wassall, is my only comment.

Compare his record against the teams we played and when PC managed against those same teams......no comparison.
Bottom half teams were dispatched previously...not with DW.
I just hope getting in the playoffs doesn't mean thathe becomes full time....we can do much much better .

Wassalls team selections and substitutions have been erratic and whilst our home form looks good, only the Hull performance can be rated as very good. It will be interesting to see if he keeps the same team against Bolton, barring any injuries.

Has to keep the same side...doesn't he!!!???

Tbf b&w...Clement's 'selections and substitutions' were no less 'erratic', but I have another reason for DW not being given the job full time...would hate to see VdLH have a breakdown ;-)

Have to say I liked Anton Rippon's description of DW's post match analysis: "...usually sees the mint rather than the hole..."
