There's no other options though, Cam. Tried golden goal and it didn't work and can't have replays in tournaments due to the time constraints. Anyway Portugal have just scored ;-)

It is surely time to find a better way to decide KO games than penalties. More and more teams seem to be playing for them these days and it's killing the game. I don't even find them exciting any more just because you know eventually someone will miss one or save one and then there will be scenes of jubilation/sorrow dependent upon which side you end up on. I just switched over to watch golf and saw more of interest in 5 minutes than I've seen in 100+ minutes of the Portugal v Croatia game - golf FFS!
PS Knew that would happen as soon as I posted![]()

Rock Paper Scissors anyone?
I think that would be OK as long as it is best of 5
I know other ideas have been considered e.g. most corners and having a scoring judge or judges like in boxing/gymnastics would be too open to subjectivity/corruption.
I'd prefer that after 90 minutes they just play extra 15 minute periods until a winning goal is scored like in ice hockey. At least then teams that maybe have been reduced to 10 men can't just hang on for penalties etc. Maybe extra substitutions (1 per period) could also be allowed.
Bumping this so karma will take effect and someone will at least try and score a goal in this dire affair. The whole sport is becoming a joke, may as well do away with extra time and go straight to penalties and save us all 30 minutes of life![]()
Plan 1 After 90 mins, if the over paid fannies can't hit a target that big,
They should have to play on. No changing sides.
No fekin breaks.
Untilo someone scores.
Plan 2
After 90 mins , They have a 10 min grace, if no one scores one of each side is shot.
That might speed things up.
I like you thinking Crash. Anything would be better than what we are seeing lately.
Split extra time into 3x10 minute periods and take a player off each side before each period.
Play 90 min then remove 1 player from each team every 5 minutes for the next 30 min (stop clock for every sub). If a player is sent off in the 90 minutes tough
As Cam said I think it goes deeper than just penalty shoot outs. The games are frequently just dire. Not helped by the constant holding and pulling back that goes on and the over-protection of goalies. Cowardice of officials too; a slight push in the middle of the park gets a free kick while an absolute blatant mugging/physical assault in the box and the ref plays on. Football is becoming a bore.
