For me the whole Gordon/Dembele thing is fairly typical and predictable PR from their board.
Rather than give Brenda a load of money to spend in January, they're instead taking the route that they have a top EPL club desperate to take Dembele, but they're not selling him for anything less than £40 million. Now, let's be fcking honest here, NOBODY is even contemplating offering them £40 million for him. They'll never have to prove that they'll hold out for that because they're probably not getting any bids whatsoever. They might as well say "we won't sell for less than a Kabillion".
Likewise with Gordon, make it look like they've steadfastly refused to sell a player for top dollar, when in fact he's never been going anywhere.
The resultant message taken by their fans is "we're pyoor mintit man!" Not even selling for £40 million! They're not even going to challenge it and say "hang on... why the fck not?" "How much are you spending on the manager's targets?" "Oh, fck all... right..."

They are summed up in one quote from the infamous Robbie Keane signing: "Rat's just won us ra league!"*
