Guard of Honour for Champions? Why bother?

I think this Guard of Honour for Champions may be a hangover from a different era. Don't see what purpose it serves, especially as it's extremely unlikely that the huns will give one to the Tims this weekend. Why bother? Why should a team feel it need give a Guard of Honour to who they see as their rivals when they're seething about their rivals winning the title?

It's even worse than this formal hand-shake nonsense that seems to happen before a lot of European games. FFS some players are wanting to cut their opponent in half - spare us the "let's all shake hands and be great sports" bs!

    Agreed, total load of shyte.

They may as well have given Celtic a guard of honour in August anyway, would've saved us debating it now.

It is a sport, and a guard of honour is a demonstration of sportsmanship.
It is a demonstration that defeat can be taken graciously and that victory can be accepted magnanimously.
It is a demonstration of values that society could do with a little more of, as opposed to the cynical sneering which is becoming increasing prevalent.
It also shows up the small-minded and petty for what they are...

Did the Tims give the Huns a Guard of Honour back in the day when they had a club that won titles? I don't recall that having happened tbh.

Maybe the giant flag-wavers on the park that try get in the faces of teams that emerge from the tunnel in ibrox might step back a little out of respect though

Points one & two you've made are perfectly reasonable points, I think point three is a bit overblown & point four isn't really a point in support of the guard of honour.
