Many may have feared for Burnley defensively when Michael Keane left for Everton over the summer, but 24-year-old James Tarkowski has filled the void superbly. Not only is he an ultra-reliable defender - he made 12 clearances, four tackles and three blocks in the game - but his passing statistics were superior to any of his team-mates.

Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe said: "It has to be James Tarkowski. Michael Keane's departure gave him a chance and he really has taken it. It's been an outstanding, individual defensive display. He was rock-solid, giving Burnley a defensive platform and that's exactly what you need away from home playing this way." Sean Dyche appears to have unearthed another gem.

    Nick Pope 8
Made one very smart early save from Sigurdsson and looked commanding as he came to clear crosses in the second half.

    Matt Lowton 7
Not as heavily involved as Ward but a solid presence in the Clarets back four throughout.

    James Tarkowski 9
Added to his remarkable collection of blocks this season and produced one thunderous challenge to deny Niasse.

    Ben Mee 7
Caught out by Calvert-Lewin’s pace a couple of times early on, but recovered to regain his composure.

Stephen Ward 9 (Man of the Match)
One excellent covering clearance early on as Niasse touched the ball beyond Pope. Defended excellent and a constant threat going forward. Set the goal up and regularly provided an outlet on the overlap.

    Robbie Brady 8
A couple of wayward clearances when defending, but a real threat going forward. Had the beating of Baines and sensational pass in lead up to goal

    Jack Cork 8
Covered the back four well, clever in possession and showed an excellent work rate.

    Steven Defour 7
Booked for dissent, but turned in another battling display, denying space for Everton’s midfield to operate in

    Scott Arfield 7
Tracked Baines’ forays forward very well. Could have done better with a couple of final balls in the first half.

    Jeff Hendrick 8
Shoed wonderful composure to finish off the move for the goal. Linked up well with Wood and took up some good positions

    Chris Wood 8
Did really well to offer the Clarets an out ball down the channels and kept the ball alive in build-up to goal.

    Subs

    Ashley Barnes for Hendrick (88)

Subs not used: Anders Lindegaard, Phil Bardsley, Kevin Long, Ashley Westwood, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Sam Vokes

    I'm going with:

    Pope (7), Lowton (7), Tarkowski (9), Mee (7), Ward (8), Cork (7), Hendrick (7), Defour (7), Arfield (7), Brady (7), Wood (8).

I thought Wood was excellent yesterday and is really tailor made for the way Dyche is currently setting his stall out.

Tarkowski needs an improved contract extension - and quick!
