    Non contact sport!

Football is rapidly becoming a non contact sport. Watching the Leicester v. Palace game on TV today, Simpson made, to me, a perfectly good tackle and got the ball. Not only was a foul given but he was yellow carded for what the commentator said was the follow through. I didn't see much of a follow through. While I don't want to see thuggery on a football pitch tackling is part of the game and some of the tackles that are blown up for are ridiculous, unless it's in the penalty area of course. OK give a free kick but referees, please keep the yellow cards in your pocket unless really deserved.

I played Parks Football for 20 years, and hardly wore shinpads. Players could get a bit tasty, but there was a brotherhood of man that all players stuck to. Every match after a rough tackle, you'd hear a voice from the touchline going: "Have a word, ref. He's got to go to work on Monday". Today, with players on £multi-million salaries, you can get some real nasty barstewards going in with studs that could ruin a bloke's career. No brotherhood there!
FIFA have recognised this by telling refs to get hard on offenders - too hard really, so, as Leicester says, it's actually ruining the Game.
I wrote some years ago to Gordon Donothing-Taylor, suggesting that "his" players show some brotherhood.....no reply!
I also wrote a couple of months ago to a Sunday Paper Sports Editor, suggesting that if the players show no restraint, the problem could be solved if aluminium studs were outlawed. The Ed has yet to respond but, in fairness, he might think that I'm spouting c rap. But, near the end of my playing days, I got stamped on, breaking my metatarsal. I'd been stamped on many times before, but a teammate told me he was "wearing these new aluminium studs" - rubber or plastic would only have bruised at worst!

Can any current players confirm that metal studs are far more lethal than plastic. If so, they're contributing to the non-contact game we have now got.

In "my day" ok we had Chopper Harris and Norman Hunter - and Gray Williams was no *****cat - but if they'd worn metal studs there would be no one left to play against them. They were hard as nails, but I don't think they would have intentionally ended careers of players on not much more than National Average Earnings.
