Leeds v Chelsea 1970 FA Cup

Showing old FA Cup replays and just watched this one again. Firstly, not sure how we didn't win that first match. By far the better side for most of it. Then again.....Sunderland... 😣 Wembley field was disgraceful, so not surprised they switched the replay to Old Trafford! But...given the condition of the field, how friggin good was Eddie Gray? Easily the MOTM by a long way. Lost count of how many times he skinned the defence when he took them on! And Terry Cooper caused massive problems down that left side also. And Billy was the usual nachine! After playing 3 semi finals, another replay (and extra time) was always going to be tough. It was one that got away for sure, but tremendous performance that really made me feel proud to be Leeds.

Ron 'Chopper' Harris said his job in the replay was to foul/take care of Eddie Gray and they would win..he did and they did..the dirty cheatin bastuds.

Agree Rev about state of pitches one of biggest changes these days is the consistent quality of the pitches.

The match was played about a month earlier than usual as the FA wanted the World Cup Holding England squad to acclimatise for Mexico. So played in the wetter climes of April instead of May, and a week after the Horse of The Year show that churned up the pitch. The replay was the first time since the 1920s that another stadium was used.

They replayed the replay match in the late 1990s to referee David Elleray, who concluded that instead of just the 1 booking he would have awarded 6 red cards and 20 yellow, you could probably revise that again today.
