We look like we have an at least moderately exciting World cup finals on the go, but how does it stack up against those from the past?
For me, the best exhibition of football ever was the '70 Finals, and the best team (there will ever be) was Brazil
Italy/Germany semi also up there as one of the best matches for excitement if not quality
Anyone?
1966....missed the game as I was at Warwick Races that day but caught some of the game in the bar and heard the rest of the game on the wireless, in the car.
there's no word makes my kids lol more than when I refer to or all-can-do DAB device as the 'wireless'
which in turn reminds me of this.

I still refer to taping a telly program even if it is on a sky box or on a recordable dvd player lol.
And I sort of go along with Mexico as the best World cup, but I think the one in '86 was/is the best one. (and I wasn't even around for the one in '70)
66 for obvious reasons. Even I am too young to have recollection of tournaments prior to that.
Putting emotion to one side, 1970 was an absolute belter.
One of the best games for excitement was Lineker v Cameroon 1990 . Edge of the seat game even though we had to witness Lineker messing himself live on t.v.
Obviously you weren't around.
I was!! But alas knew nothing about it.
I agree with you. 1986 was special. So many teams were outstanding. They almost all had their golden generation.
Belgium, Mexico, USSR, England, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany and Brazil.
Anyone of those could have won the tournament.
In a tournament of stars, the 1 star, Diego Maradona outshone every one and stood at the top of the world.
That's why despite Pele being a star in 2 World Cup wins, Maradona with just the 1 is considered by many to be the greatest.
Who is greater, I always thought Pele, but am warming to the idea that it could be Maradona.
