    R.I.P Paul Madeley

Sad news. What a Rolls Royce of a player he was. He could play any position on the pitch. Strangely just before I heard about his death I was watching highlights on U tube of Leeds V Arsenal from 1969. Gary Sprake pole-axed Bobby Gould with a left hook. When they finally brought Gould round both players were booked. Today Sprake would get a nine match ban & the police would get involved. Mind you, when Gould played for & managed us I could quite happily have taken a swing at him!

I would describe him as an elegant player with the ball at his feet. He could pass it, head it, tackle and score the odd goal. One of the best.

A great player. Stood out in a very good Leeds team. Was that good Sir Alf wanted to take him to Mexico 70 in probably the best England squad since but he refused as he’d played a lot of games that year. After retirement I got a feeling he went back to work in his families DIY store business. Makes you think what players like that would be worth today when you look at what some mediocrities earn today.

Coming from Harrogate as I did and having a dad and brother who supported Leeds United I saw a lot of games at Elland Rd in the 70’s when we visited my grandparents.

My dad was a real student of football and himself a very good amateur centre forward.

He said that the best three players he ever saw in a Leeds shirt were John Charles,Bobby Collins and Paul Madeley and he also adored Eddie Gray who was forever injured.

Madeley was a lot like John Charles.....upright,elegant,smooth in movement, sure in the tackle.

Long pass, short pass......reading of the game,he had the lot.

Madeley was a very humble man,he said that Leed’s best eleven didn’t feature him,

    Sprake
    Reaney
    Cooper
    Charlton
    Hunter
    Lorimer
    Bremner
    Giles
    Clarke
    Mick Jones
    Gray

That’s an interesting supposition for a man who played 750 plus games and played at least 15 times in every position other than goalkeeper.......that said he’d probably have been better than Sprake!

My memory of that era was that Leeds were a far better side with him in it such was his class in any position.

He also didn’t have that nasty side attributed to most of that Leeds side.

Don Revie called him in for contact talks later in his career.

Revie said ......”do you want two or three years Paul?

    “You decide” says Paul.

“What sort of money are you looking for this time”

Madeley replied....”Look boss,I just want to play for Leeds United so you fill in the money and all the other details and I’ll just sign this blank piece of paper!

    What class.

Maybe show this story to Craig Dawson and the rest of the want away w a n k e r s.

A class bloke and player Madeley,a privvelidge to have seen him in his pomp.
