    Raise the bar

I was listening to Talksport the other day and they had that clown Mike Parry on.
For a change he seemed to be talking sense and I agree with him.
His point was the size of the goals have never changed despite the fact that the average height of men has increased from around 5'4 to nearly 6'. Add to that the improved fitness, agility & athleticism and that means less goals.
The 'Raise the bar' campaign proposes making the bar 6'' higher and increasing the width by a foot.
It would reward attacking teams and make it more difficult for teams to just sit back and defend.
I watched Huddersfield twice in 3 days last season play with virtually no attacking intent at Man City, then Chelsea and picked up 2 points.
    It was painful to watch.
Other sports are going to have the same problem.
Golfers are making a mockery of par 5's and they're having to lengthen courses.
Rugby players are now so big, fit & strong they're causing serious injuries to each other.
I watched the brilliant Roger Federer eventually succumb to a 6'8'' giant, serving consistently at 120 mph.
In a few years there will be no rallies because the speed of the serves will make them impossible to return.
The only solution will be to start watching women's sport.

You could raise the bar by 3 foot and lengthen it by the same amount and Kieffer Moore would still miss hodger .

As for tennis I'd do away with the second serve , that would sort that out .

    Interesting points mate .

Basketball players are as tall as the net now and just roll the ball in off their palm.

I've read the average length of a ***** has increased by 4.7 cm in the last 50 years.

The increasing height of snooker players means they hardly use the rest nowadays.

Im the same Hodger, I rarely bother with these phone in shows anymore but sometimes the annoying presenters or pundits do say some sensible things. (its not often, but sometimes they do!)
I don't agree with the raising the bar thing, but I bet as fans we're always thinking of what other possible rule changes could we make, to improve the game ?.

I'm thinkin make our goals smaller. Like a snooker pocket size. And we'll rule.

It's down to human evolution and genetics. Things get bigger and better generation after generation so with that comes more ability and skill. The goal size should remain the same in my opinion. It works both ways for me.

The answer to beating defensive tactics is difficult . Nubdys quite cracked it yet but to implement defensive tactics takes skill and organisation. It's rather like what Wimbledon did with their long ball tactics, nubdy liked it but it was effective and took a lot more skill than people realise. Jack Charlton implemented the same with the republic of Ireland and had success but was in the end found out.

I'm a football purist and like to see positive attacking football but you have to respect the fact that lesser teams will find anything they can to try and make it a more level playing field. It's part of the game.

They don't call it the alehouse or the kick n rush league for nothing do they!. But we do have some recent experience of winning promotion from it so lets hope that will count for something this season.
Its been said that the gap is getting bigger between Lg One and the Champship, and the fact that the 3 relegated teams all went straight back up maybe backs that claim up a bit more.

People said the same when Becker came onto the scene in the 80’s
