    Health Warning : Artificial Sweetners.

    .

Six artificial sweeteners used in a range of soft drinks and foods 'are TOXIC to gut bacteria

Scientists analysed sweeteners approved for consumption in the US and EU
They included the controversial aspartame, which is used in Diet Coke
The study offers 'further evidence' that artificial sweeteners can damage health

Scientists found six sweeteners - all approved for use in foods and drinks in the US and EU - were toxic to gut microbes.

It only took one mg/ml of the artificial sweeteners to turn the bacteria toxic.

And the higher the amount of artificial sweetener, the more toxins that are released, according to the team led by Professor Ariel Kushmaro.
He said: 'This is further evidence consumption of artificial sweeteners adversely affects gut microbial activity which can cause a wide range of health issues.
'The results of this study might help in understanding the relative toxicity of artificial sweeteners and the potential of negative effects on the gut microbial community.'
Diet drinks account for a quarter of the sweetened beverages market but there is growing evidence they are not as healthy as previously thought.

The sweeteners are also emerging as environmental pollutants due to them being resistant to wastewater treatment processes.

In the Israeli experiment, 10-week-old mice were fed a daily dose of aspartame, sucralose or saccharin. Another cluster of mice were given water laced with one of two natural sugars, glucose or sucrose. After 11 weeks, the mice receiving sugar were doing fine, whereas the mice fed artificial sweeteners had abnormally high blood sugar (glucose) levels, an indication that their tissues were having difficulty absorbing glucose from the blood. Left unchecked, this “glucose intolerance” can lead to a host of health problems, including diabetes and a heightened risk of liver and heart disease. But it is reversible: after the mice were treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics to kill all their gut bacteria, the microbial population eventually returned to its original makeup and balance, as did blood glucose control.

Researchers say the consumption of artificial sweeteners can adversely affect gut microbial activity, causing a wide range of health issues from cancers to type-2 diabetes.

My old Aunty wouldn't touch sugar, as far back as I can remember, which is quite a long way back, it was artificial sweeteners only for her. She must have consumed tons of them over the years. They got her in the end though, she died last year aged 96.

Very rarely do I drink Coke or any fizzy drink except the occasional Ginger Beer, Matron always drinks Diet Coke even though I have told her for years that I believed it wasn't good for the brain.

Just on my Aunty again Alto, she used to work in the Priestley Footwear factory in Great Harwood. She told me that when any of the metal buckles they used were tarnished, they cleaned them using Coca Cola, it brought them up brighter and shinier than any proprietary cleaner could. I was always a bit dubious about drinking it after learning that.

thats interesting - Sinkov....did she stick to a specific type, was it just in her Tea perhaps, or did she also look for it in her soft drinks, food, cakes, jams and jellies, crisps, chocolate, ice-cream, yogurt....etc etc etc ?

We steer well clear - Alto....and didn't need any scientific study to make us so...just Natural moderation.

She used two of those little sweetener pills in every cup of tea Norder, I would think always the same brand but I can't be sure, and god knows how many cups of tea she had in a day, it was a lot. She used to make a lot of cakes, trifles, biscuits etc, but to be honest just what she used for her baking I don't know.

Just Googled Coca Cola cleaning methods and besides others, it can loosen rusty bolts and even clean your toilet bowl, so I'll give Matron even more grief now.
