Just seen his attempt to save Ipswich's goal, it was described as going down in stages, being a former keeper myself you don't like to pull other keepers to pieces but he looks like a 40 year old Shilton, one arm out and a very stiff 'dive', even though he had no chance with the Leeds first goal once again it was a very stiff dive.
He does not seem very agile at all, in agility I mean suppleness, being able to get down to the bottom corners as well as the top corners, there have been many decent keepers but two that stand out for agility are Bruce Grobbelare (sp) and Tony Godden, both very flexible, Ray Clemence was also very supple.
If I was a goalkeeping scout Johnstone would not be very high on my list.
Personally I was delighted when we signed him.
I never expected him to be played as a sweeper/keeper or playmaker so I’m not going to criticise him too much for that.
But with most of the season now gone I think he has lost us far more points than he has saved us.
At best I feel very much underwhelmed with his overall contribution thus far and often I see him as a liability. Maybe he will turn out to be a hero in the play offs.
When you see a keeper of the class of Joe Hart languishing in Burnley’s thirds it makes you wonder about so called coaches and managers and the way they head fk players.
I’d take Hart in a heartbeat.......he’s not even 32 years old FFS.
Maybe he makes the odd rick but don’t tell me he wouldn’t earn more points than he loses in a season.
A real class keeper.
I think that we are being a bit harsh on Johnstone. I feel that he has suffered because of our insistence in 'playing it out from the back' on every occasion. He has obviously been coached to play this way, even when it is ridiculous to do so. This in turn has affected his confidence. It will be interesting to see how he performs under a new coach and will reserve judgement until then. In his defence he has also kept us in games, even yesterday he stopped a certain goal with his legs in the first half.
