Well, there's every possibility that we could be losing Shelvey, Diame and Hayden in the Summer so we need to be looking at replacements...and upgrades! Ki going wouldn't necessarily weaken the squad and neither would any of those others leaving.
Shelvey has never done it consistently and looked genuinely disinterested when he came on against Palace...I suspect he won't be happy sitting on the bench, which is where it seems Rafa prefers him at the moment. It's a shame because when he's on form he's a very good player and I think he could be good for Almiron but you'd think his time here may be done.
Diame offers tackling...that's it!!...and is shocking in every other aspect of his game. Surely he could be replaced without too much trouble? If he's still here after the Summer, something's gone badly wrong.
Hayden...has really stepped up this season. Don't hold anything against him for wanting to leave and has settled into his role well-he puts a shift in every game, too. Not a first choice ideally but we'd have been stuffed without him.
Ki....erm...was playing well before he went off and does a decent job of moving us forward without losing the ball. Decent set peice on him, too.
The point of all this is that none of them should be too hard to replace-as long as each individual is replaced as they leave. We definitely, imo, need to invest in a first-choice midfielder to play alongside Longstaff-next season could be massive for him-maybe a Tiote-type so that Longstaff can get forward a bit more.
The other point is that it shouldn't be too hard to improve the squad if we buy well. Lots of ifs and buts...but I wouldn't be too sad or worried to see any of them go.
Well said Zip.
I'd worry that we replace a Shelvey type player - i see him going.
But then we don't with the others.
I could see Diame getting that contract extension, he allegedly only needs 2 more games to get it.
None of these players are ones i'd want to replace (bar Diame) but actually replacing them i think would be a harder thing.
