I can remember watching Liverpool play a European Cup match back in the day. Two things stuck in my memory, the first was one of the opposition wingers playing with gloves on, I was shocked, I'd never seen that before, it was a game for proper men back then, not big girl's blouses. The second was Tommy Smith spending 90 minutes kicking lumps out of said winger, fair enough Tommy kicked anything that moved, but he seemed to make a special effort for this lad.

Many years later I was reading a story about Tommy, and he'd claimed he was once so incensed simply by one of his opponents wearing gloves playing against him at Anfield, that he'd tried to kick him into Row Z of the stand every chance he got. Normally I'd have thought this story was apocryphal, there are dozens of 'hard men' stories doing the rounds that probably never happened, but I knew this one was true, I'd seen it with my own eyes.
