My earliest recollection of 'Mr Magpie' was from the top of the Football Post when I became a Notts fan in the 1950's.
This particular edition is from January 1st 1955, the headline recording Jimmy Jackson's 4 goals in our 5-1 win against West Ham
Do any of the older fans on here know much about the origins of the old bowler hatted magpie? I don't think it was ever a club badge, but it was clearly a very popular emblem for the club right up until the sixties. Where did it come from? Like the stylised magpie badge of the 70s and 80s, I find it very cool and wish the club would do more with it.

The Ogdens cigarette card you attached is from a set of 50 'Club Nicknames' issued in 1933. I guess the picture itself is Ogden's artist's impression of our nickname but certainly looks more of a 'gentleman' than the Football Post's effort.
We could just so easily have looked like this, Newcastle's.
It was definitely a Football Post ( News?) creation.
It never failed to amaze me how that paper came out within an hour of the end of the match. Great part of the Saturday afternoon ritual, and much missed.
I wonder if the Footy post filched the image from the above mentioned Ogdens AFC nicknames cards?
Apparently you can still buy a set of 50 (reprinted) to this day.
