You couldn't' make it up!

I was watching the lunch time news on BBC today and couldn't believed my ears. They had some expert, I can't remember who, talking about the shocking death rate in March. He then compared it to March 2019 saying that there were 8,000 more deaths than the same month last year. Guess what? We are in the middle of the worst pandemic in a generation. Of course the death rate is much higher. Where do they get these people from? As I say, you couldn't make it up!

Not necessarily, since the start of the year around 180,000 people have died, after being tested for Coronavirus.
This is a frightening figure without a doubt.
But yesterday 160,000 people died worldwide, and 380,000 were born. This is pretty much standard figures day after day.
So compare 180,000 deaths since January to 160,000 deaths in a 24 hour period you can see the figures for this year could be lower for the month.
Also although we don't know how many people have directly died from this virus we do know roughly how many have died after being tested positive, and that can be a little open ended.

In the past nine and a half hours since midnight 64,000 people have died and 150,000 have been born. You can see about the kind of figures we are playing with.
