Historic football trophy found on ebay

The Century old Sheffield and Hallamshire FA County Cup has been found and now returned to the Sheffield FA.

For those too young to recognise this trophy, it was was an annual one, played for at the end of the season by Sheff United, Sheff Weds, Rotherham , Barnsley and Doncaster.

The last winners, Barnsley, who won it in 1993, took the trophy back to Oakwell but then it disappeared??

Sheffield FA asked for the cup back in order to include it in a football history display.

Luckily a keen football historian saw it on ebay and recognised it straightaway. He paid £2000 for the trophy which is supposed to be a fraction of the trophy's full value. The Sheffield FA have now reimbursed the finder for the money he paid out for it.

    A few pointers:

Who lifted it from Oakwell and sold it on ebay? Theft or, something someone came across it and took it from Oakwell anyway? One for SYP?

How about this great competition be resurrected and the 5 clubs from South Yorkshire, could use this as a great end of season
    bragging rights boast?

Can't recall us ever winning this, I may be wrong so does anyone know the full winning history on this?

Found this lot. We actually first won it as Rotherham County in 1922-23 season.

We've won it a total of 7 times and been in no less than 20 of the finals.

My recollection is that the cup was competed for pre season
Unless my memory is playing tricks [well my recollection is late 50's /early 60's so I may be wrong]

Might have been a pre-season competition in more recent times, but don't think it was in pre-season in the 60s.
    Misprint above for 1969/70?
As a kid, went to a County Cup Final match at Millmoor that ended 1-0, with Roy Massey scoring the winner. Think he was originally a centre forward, but sometimes filled in as a winger. Probably 1965/6 season.
It was a competition where reserves/squad players often got a chance to play, even back in the 60s. Are Barnsley paying the costs for the recovery of the trophy?

Programme on eBay - Donny v Millers 1965/66 Semi-final Sheffield County Cup 18th May 1966. Final could have been held over until start of the next season? (Sounds vaguely familiar - it was always a problem slotting the County Cup fixtures into the schedule)

In the 60s both Sheffield teams were in the top division and we were in Division 2, so quite big crowds for the games, but it went into decline afterwards. We have an extra cup competition now, so it would be difficult to fit the County Cup into the schedule. Could have it as a competition for U-21/Reserves squads of S.Yorks league teams, plus some local non-league teams, as our reserves don't play many fixtures now. Think Chesterfield are in the Derbyshire County Cup so were never included anyway.

Mike what’s an extra cup game for local pride at the end of the season? Let the youth team thrash it out ‘

Coming back to dates of the competition - spotted on eBay Barnsley v Millers programme County Cup Semi-final dated 8th May 1968. Barnsley must have won that game, but lost to Donny in the final at Belle Vue

Anyone know why we played ourselves in 69/70?
