Rather than look at assets of Lai which can be sold if relegated I prefer to look at this:
Improvements to the squad and payroll since struggling to gain promotion:

Ivanovic and Gallagher but we have sold Leko and released high earners like Brunt and Barry.

So one could ask how has the playing squad been improved?

Therein is the problem. We have bought the players who did well and entertained us last season in a lower division. Delving into the 3rd and 4th tier used to work (Astle, Clark, Kaye & Osborne spring to mind) but very few make that leap nowadays. Buying from the top flight will only bring in cast offs from other top flight clubs, see what we are trying to shift, and should be avoided.
Players abroad will head to the big teams rather than the likes of us, even though we would be more likely to give them matchtime. Seems to be unimportant to them nowadays, all about the money. Makes you wonder how much they need to be happy.
No fun for the fans anymore.
