    Notts looking for a striker

Ricky Miller has signed for Aldershot Town despite interest from Notts County as the striker finally ended his year's absence from professional football.

Nottinghamshire Live understands the Magpies were contemplating a swoop for the ex-Peterborough forward who has been a free agent since leaving Port Vale.

But it is believed that Miller decided against a switch to the Magpies because he did not want to uproot from his home in the south.

Aldershot have now taken full advantage by landing Miller on a contract although the length of the terms have not been revealed.

The 31-year-old has proven track record in front of goal, although his career has been plagued by off the field problems.

But Miller says he is now eager to make up for lost time by helping Aldershot climb the National League table.

He said: “I’ve got a point to prove that I’m still capable of what I’ve done.

“I feel fitter than I did at Dover and I’ve come a long way since then as well, so I’m hoping I can pick up where I left off.”

Miller rose to prominence at Dover in 2014 where he scored 45 goals in 46 games which sealed a move to Peterborough United in 2017.

But he made just 10 appearances for Posh before leaving for a loan spell at Mansfield and then ended up at Vale.

It is not the first time Notts have been linked with Miller during the course of his career with the forward linked with a switch to Meadow Lane when Kevin Nolan was manager.

It is understood the Magpies are now contemplating their transfer options for the rest of the season with a host of loan deals set to expire.

Sheffield United defender Sam Graham, Barnsley midfielder Matty Wolfe, Harrogate winger Tom Walker and Mansfield's Jimmy Knowles are all waiting to see whether their parent clubs recall them.

Neal Ardley issues update on Notts County's loan players as deals set to expire
Boss Neal Ardley said last week that he would like to retain the services of the quartet, but said the decisions was out of his hands due to their lack of game time.

A striker could be on the agenda for Notts in the coming weeks particularly if Knowles is recalled by Mansfield.

Wes Thomas is currently out despite recovering from a kidney stone and is yet to return to the first team with Notts not due to play again until January 9 when they face Eastleigh.

Should Knowles depart and if Thomas is not back in contention, it would leave Notts with just Eli Sam and top scorer Kyle Wootton as their only centre forwards.

Some names just keep resurfacing - bring on Noh Alam Shah! Mind you, if we did bring him out of retirement, he would only be a year older than our undroppable captain!

What Scoop's report fails to mention is that Miller has apparently been a free agent since leaving Port Vale at the end of the 2018-19 season.

My worry is that, if true, we were trying to sign someone who's 32 in March and hasn't played competitively in over 18 months. That is definitely not a Football Radar signing. (Of course, now watch him score a hat-trick for Aldershot against us.)

As I was in work avoidance mode the other day, I spent 10 minutes looking at the leading goalscorers in the National Leagues North and South: 29, 28, 31, 32, 34 ... these aren't the number of goals scored, but the ages of the players at the top of the charts. There was one notable exception, of course - some kid called Osborne who's scored 10 in 14 for Leamington and turns 22 at the end of next week.

Also, one thing that just doesn't make sense to me: "Boss Neal Ardley said last week that he would like to retain the services of the quartet, but said the decisions were out of his hands due to their lack of game time."

If they're not getting game time, doesn't that mean we should be looking for loan players who are better than what we currently have? Players who will get in the first XI and actually improve the side, rather than players who the manager clearly doesn't trust and are seemingly only there to make the team photo a little less sparse?

I'd try and sign that lad who can't get a game at St Mirren.

I’d be surprised if this was true he’s a bad egg apparently and causes problems for the management where ever he plays.
Plus why would Ardley want another striker he that tactically inept he doesn’t believe in playing anymore that 1 striker at a time.

I have read that many times - a proper trouble maker allegedly.
May just be anecdotal and we don't know the lad but it's a consistent theme on various forums.

His personal life profile on Wikipedia certainly creates that impression, and his scoring record at his most recent club was not impressive.

It's fairly obvious that we're missing a natural goal scorer since Kristian Dennis left, but if we've got the money to sign one then I'd prefer to pull a rabbit out of Football Radar's database again rather going after "someone who was", particularly if they've been out of the game for a year like Miller. Aldershot are welcome to him.

Maybe give Knowles a decent run before we take a gamble on someone new? He looks a good finisher to me.
