To be honest 9goals, nothing surprises me any more. I suppose that this means that Japanese tourists shouldn't buy a tee shirt with the Tower of London printed on it. Surely this lunacy has to end soon.

My wife loves sewing and is always looking at anything sewing related. Recently she has started commenting about how many sites have started banging on about 'cultural appropriation.' Europeans shouldn't wear clothes with African prints on for example (does these mean Africans shouldn't wear suits? Just showed me this from paper cut patterns facebook site
"In light of the recent discussions online addressing cultural appropriation, racism and hate against Asian Culture, we would like to apologise for naming a collection of our patterns after Japanese cities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we designed these patterns years ago, we named them after Japanese places out of our adoration for the beautiful Japanese aesthetic. At that time, we did not realise that this could be hurtful or inappropriate. We understand that this is problematic and that our actions, no matter how well intended from our point of view, have caused hurt.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have never intended to offend or hurt anyone but there is absolutely no excuse for cultural appropriation, and we would like to do better and actively address where we have gone wrong. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have removed these patterns from our online store and will be re-naming them immediately. The styles will be available again online once we have completed a thorough process of finding appropriate names; these new names will be reflected in all future print runs from today. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to those of you who reached out to us and have been brave enough to open the conversation. We wholeheartedly respect and acknowledge the work you’re doing and are proud to be part of a community that’s standing up for Asian Culture - as we all should be. Thank you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don’t and will not support any violent or disrespectful behaviours towards Asian culture, and we would like to encourage everyone to keep the conversations about anti-racism respectful, supportive and educational. We will not tolerate hateful or racist comments in our community, but seek to positively contribute to these important conversations on this platform."
Tbf all the comments from readers including Japanese ladies are as incredulous of why this is an issue as I am. Anyone disagree?

This is why it’s lunacy to “embrace diversity” yet at the same time be offended by diversity. It’s not good for the brain. It makes steam come out of it. Cultures are diversity. Being offended that you are wearing something not of your culture or not named after your culture is a complete nonesense. Most of us Brits have worn American T shirts with California written on it or New York Yankees and yet it’s never meant anything serious.
So much for my “Japs Eye” then.
What to do??
9goals, can I ask where your wife obtained the information and who the company is? It's so 'barking' that I'm wondering if it's a spoof.
My wife has been complaining about this type of posting on various sewing sites not just this one recently. When she told me you were no longer able to use the terms like 'kimono sleeve' or Indie print like you I thought she was perhaps going a bit over the top. Then she showed me this,
Can't get a link to this just google 'sewing cultural appropriation' and there is loads of stuff.

It’s just like in the USA where in the NFL the world famous Washington Redskins have felt the need to drop the second part of their name.
Someone on here made a good point the other day, our history is being wiped out before our very eyes.
In 60 years ( or a lot less ) once everyone born before 1980 old has pretty much died the world will be vanilla.........our generation and those before us will be regarded as racists and uneducated morons, a new truth will be written.
I fear the arguments that may ensue if I live another 10-25 years with my own grandchildren because I will not be spoken down to if they get indoctrinated with this guff........I’m hoping to be able to offer them perspective and an alternative view but I suspect I’ll be p I s s I n g against a very strong breeze.
That's Prince Charles and his kilt f ucked then.😂
