I also get fed up listening to all this nonsense about Covid before you can actually speak to someone in a call centre.
In early May 2021 I phoned the Calmac contact centre to book my ferry. I spent about five minutes listening to the same blurb about Covid and then I was in a queue for 25 minutes before someone answered the phone. Calmac were still operating on reduced Covid opening hours despite Nippy having opened up the country to tourists on 26th April 2021.
God help us if Calmac are awarded the contract to run Scotrail. It will be a shambles.

How will they tackle the difficulties associated with getting ships to run on train tracks? Is there a plan?

It is nothing to do with putting ferries on rail tracks.
CalMac is owned by the Scottish Ministers (Scottish Government) and the CalMac bosses are not allowed to think for themselves. They do what they are told to do by the Transport Minister which is currently Graeme Day the former sports editor on the Dundee Courier before he became an MSP.

Or not to be told that prices are going through the roof 'because of covid'. Building materials being a ridiculous example of this.
