It’s funny with these ‘expert’ opinions on expectations at Newcastle that there are never any phrases like:
“I was talking to some nufc fans the other day and...”, or “I don’t agree with the view of a fan I spoke to last week....” because, in every case, they haven’t spoken to a single fan of our club about their expectations.
I find such comments extremely condescending, I mean, who thinks we’ll win the league straight away if the PIF buy us FFS?

I think what's most annoying about this is that the media seem to think that just because someone is an ex-pro football player they a) understand the business of football and b) should be given a platform to voice their opinions. I mean, he's practically contradicting himself from one sentence to the next in this interview.

Right, it isn't easy... but that's because those clubs have money that they largely got from their owners! If he was asked why Man City have become successful, could he give an answer that didn't involve the Qatari investment?? If not, then why wouldn't the same rule apply to Newcastle and the Saudis? If he says it's FFP rules, then I would like to remind him of the outcome of the league's attempt to impose FFP on Man City!

Maybe, maybe not. Depends how much money you have. Man City failed to reach the CL in 2009/10, but they didn't have to sell players. Man Utd did't qualify in 2018/19, 2016/17, 2015/16, or 2013/14, and there's been no fire sale. Quite the opposite, in fact.

If he's on about Chansiri, his net worth is about the same as the purchase price of NUFC. It's a whole other world to the PIF. Here, he's failing to understand that numbers can be big or small.

No debt = over £100m debt to the chairman. Running a nice tight ship = not reducing that debt in profitable seasons, and posting huge losses in other seasons.

What does this even mean?? If he goes personally bankrupt? He's increased his personal wealth since becoming owner of the club, mainly via his primary business concern for which he uses our club as a free advertising vehicle, so it's not likely. And even if it did, it doesn't impact the club directly, unless he recalls his loan in full (assuming there's a mechanism for that). If he means the club going bankrupt, then why would we want to give it back to an owner who saw us go bankrupt (even if he was someone we absolutely adored)?? I'm absolutely baffled as to what is going on in his head here, if anything.

Lets assume it's true that the aim of a lot of clubs in the PL is just to stay in the league. What's the best way to ensure that? Invest in the club. What do we want our owners to do (whether that's Ashley or someone else)? Invest in the club. It's that simple.

“If Mike Ashley is making profit every year and it is going into his bank, then he is running the business right."

So, the aim of the club is purely to make a profit? Fine. Is he doing that? Not by the latest set of accounts, and many others previously. So, in what way is he doing a great job? He can't exactly point to a huge net transfer spend as an excuse for failing to make a profit either. That means by Waddle's own standards Ashley is doing a bad job. And the owners of City are doing an even worse job by this standard... and we still can't compete with them! If the sole aim isn't to make a profit, then at some point the issue of what goes on on the pitch surely has to come up - it's a football club, after all. And if he isn't making a profit, and the football hasn't improved, then is there any meaningful way in which this business is being run in the right way? Utterly baffling.
