O/T - Worst Roads To Drive On?

Some of you will know of the stretch of road I’m about to mention.

Returning towards Stourbridge from Dudley, from the end of Pear Tree Lane.....through the section past the Merry Hill Centre and down the Thorns Rd up to and just beyond the traffic lights at Lye.

This is the most stressful road on which I’ve ever driven, it’s inhabited by fools, w a n k e r s, utter morons and a large % of people who can’t possibly have taken a U.K. driving test!

It’s just as bad making the journey in the reverse direction and during dark winter nights it gets even worse.

It’s almost 42 years since I passed my test and although I’m nearly 60 I still drive in a positive an non doddering manner and so I can hold my own in any battle of wits on the road but the level of ineptitude and sheer level of stupidity knows no bounds on this three mile section.

The Birmingham New Rd from the bottom of the Priory Rd up towards Ettingshall used to be a pain but it has nothing on the Thorns Rd.

Anyone else use this death trap of a road or have a similar one in their area?

I think it's acommon thing everywhere. I passed my test in the early 70's and have seen things decline since then, A typical me me me attitude. Tailgating, no indicating, stupid parking, no looking further than the end of the bonnet - Just don't get me started on Motorway drivung !

You're spot on Scoop regarding motorway driving. The biggest problem is that drivers entering the motorway now assume that they have the right of way instead of the other way round. Very few wait for a gap and just drive straight on without reducing their speed.

There is a road called Cheshire Road in Smethwick which I used to make a short cut to Smethwick High Street when there were roadworks going on. Its a fairly lengthy 2 way street with parked cars on either side but only enough room for ONE car to pass either way. Many a time I've entered the road and would speed as quickly as possible to get to the other end before anyone enters coming the opposite direction.

But on a few occasions I've had cars coming towards and had to reverse almost the full length of the road to allow that car to get through. I now avoid it and make a mile detour instead - an absolute mare of a road. In fact a lot of back street roads are like this - 2 way traffic with both sides of the road littered with cars, making getting through gaps like an obstacle course.

Did you ever try Rosefield Road instead? As an aside the Soho Road is a right pain both in terms of congestion and vacant brain driver syndrome. Dudley Road from Grove Lane to Summerfield Road isn't exactly a joy either.

Not keen on the A449 by what was the Stewponey, road goes from two lanes to one by the lights and the idiots race to overtake.

Motorways, why do people think it’s a freeway and just stick in the middle or outside lane, these are for overtaking! It’s also illegal to undertake, not sure anyone coming from overseas actually has to take a test they just convert their licenses, crazy…

Try Quinton road west, it’s dodge the ramps and 100’s of pot holes.

I think that we would all be horrified but maybe not surprised if we knew how many uninsured and unlicensed drivers there are infesting our roads. I’m sure that there are many who have been banned from driving take absolutely no notice of such bans and continue to drive regardless. Not enough police about and penalties are not harsh enough.
