The Clarets make the trip to St James’ Park on Wednesday when both clubs will be hoping to bounce back from disappointing starts to their League campaigns. An opening day loss at Turf Moor to Brighton was followed by a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. Meanwhile Newcastle contrived to take the lead twice against visitors West Ham before succumbing to a 4-2 defeat. There was no joy for the Magpies away at Villa Park either where goals from Danny Ings and an El Ghazi penalty saw the Villans to a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Important home League games lie ahead this weekend for both clubs with Newcastle hosting Southampton whilst Burnley welcome Leeds United. Wholesale changes can be expected to be made by both managers for this fixture. Under fire boss Steve Bruce - and when is he not under pressure given the weight of Geordie expectations- is likely to bring Jamal Lewis, Manquillo, Hendrick and Dwight Gayle into his starting line-up with Sean Longstaff, Ryan Fraser and Joelinton all in contention for places. With injuries to goalkeepers Dubravka and Dummett, Freddie Woodman is likely to be kept back for the visit of the Saints with Mark Gillespie deputising. Sean Dyche is likely to give first starts to recent signings Wayne Hennessey and Nathan Collins with Bardsley, Pieters and Rodriguez all set to feature. Vydra and Westwood who both missed the Anfield defeat will probably not be called into action for this game.
The Clarets have a poor record in recent Cup competitions and this fixture is unlikely to bring any change in fortunes. An early goal for the Clarets could however unsettle the home crowd. So COYC!

Newcastle 2 - 0 Clarets. Can’t see us scoring. Hope I am wrong.
We do have this habit of getting a result just when you wonder how we're ever going to get one again. That said, if Newcastle's stiffs can't put our stiffs away, they're in as bad a state as us. I fully expect our miserable summer to go on being miserable tonight.
Difficult to call but I'm hoping for a surprise win to boost confidence, JRod to make it 1-0 to us.
I've been pondering this game while sat on the loo, I reckon we'll lose on penalties, 5-4.![]()
