RIP Bamber Gascoigne, who presented University Challenge from 1962 - 1987.
Always remembering watching this programme as a kid thinking, wow, those people are so brainy, as I had no idea what he was on about when asking a question. Anyone else ever watch it?
Rip bamber…….but can’t help remembering the young ones comedy spoof of university challenge..it was so funny….even busting the illusion that one team actually was above the other..😃
"Who do you think you are - Bamber Gascoigne?" was always a jibe aimed at someone saying something intelligent, or at least what they thought was intelligent.
footballers in that era were particularly thick (just in that era?). So anybody with a decent education was a bit of a freak. Steve Heighway was known as "big Bamber" because he had a degree. Brian Hall was known as "little Bamber" because he also had a degree -but was little.
In the early 70s I saw Bamber rowing on the Thames , near Richmond, with a lady friend. Resisted the temptation to shout "here's your starter for 10" or somesuch. It was a bit posh round there.
Always loved the programme, it's still my favourite quiz show, I'd love to have a go but going to Kimmy doesn't qualify apparently.. RIP Bamber I believe the show was his brainchild.
