The Best Player We Nearly Signed?

If Silk hadn’t died in that air crash in 1980-81 period Trevor Francis would’ve been an Albion player rather than have gone to Forest.

Silk’s death was the biggest tragedy to befall our club, if he’d lived I firmly believe we would’ve been a “Leicester City” type club ( as they are now ) for the last 40 odd years.

We’d have won the Prem and Division 1 as it was for certain and been top 8 contenders continually in a 40,000 capacity stadium.

But for me Trevor Francis is the best we nearly signed.

Not sure how close we came to actually signing Francis though. Remember reading an article based on a snippet from some old board minutes.

According to those minutes we only bid £100,000 for a player who moved on for ten times that amount.

And Francis moved in 1979 which was before Silk died in the air crash. Still, we can but dream for could have happened otherwise.

Not sure your timing is correct on that. I left England in 1979 and I am pretty sure Forest signed Francis before I left. In fact, didnt he score the winner in the 1979 European cup final for them? I remember watching that game on TV just before I emigrated. And Silk was alive when i left - in fact I had no idea he died because I pretty much lost touch with all things Albion without the internet when I left.
