    Travel

I was lucky enough to travel abroad with my parents from the age of seven, but a lot of people never went abroad until their late ****s or twenties. Some people have never been out of the country. One bloke from Sedgley died in the 1940's aged about 90, and had never been out of the village. A oldish bloke who worked at Thompson's while I was there in the seventies didn't see the sea until he was 19, and was mesmerised by it.
On the other hand a thousand years ago Vikings travelled all over the known world and discovered new land. The Crusader's would have been awed by the sophisticated cities, the blue skies and sparkling sea's of the Holy Land, not to mention the exotic fruits and women.
It seems people have always been split between the adventurous and the not so adventurous, nothing has changed much in centuries. Some kid's I went to school with stayed in every night and watched TV.
Saying all that there is nowhere I yearn to go anymore apart from Yorkshire, one place I have never been apart from football matches. I have no desire to go abroad again.

🎵 There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbour, tomorrow for old England she sails.🎵

I have traveled a bit but usually for spiritual insight and further education.
USA never appealed to me in its most recent position.....although I have friends on a reservation on Warm Springs Reservation, who perhaps if things change, I would love to visit...........
But I am quite happy exploring Ireland now...and the idea of going to an airport and all that goes with that is just not for me.....

I discovered the cruise ships 4 years ago and enjoyed the fact I could visit several countries in 2 weeks. But they can stick it now. Have you seen the restrictions in place just to board a boat? Tests for this and tests for that and NO buffet. The experience is now ruined for me and many others - not sure it will ever return to the way it was.

I was very fortunate as a child, my parents took me on holiday all over Europe. I’ve been to lots of places since, most often to the USA, and have visited most states there and had a great time. Nowadays, though, times are strange and uncertain and if we go anywhere this year it will be within the UK.

We are about half way through an 8 week holiday driving down the east coast of Italy and back up the west coast and loving it. Love the food and drink, love the sunshine and 2 bits that Italy does best for me the history and the architecture. Haven't been 'restricted' at all.

We went to Italy in 2018, did the ‘top to toe’ rail journey, began in Turin and 16 days later finished in Sicily, via Venice, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Rome, Sorrento, and Pompeii. A wonderful trip, travelling by train is the way to go!

Never went abroad as a kid, mum and dad couldn’t afford it.

First proper holiday was Butlins at Bognor Regis in 72 when I was 11.

First foreign holiday was Callela in Spain with a girlfriend in 83 when I was 21, coach from Dudley down to Lydd in Kent, ramshackle small plane to Beauvais in France and coach the rest of the way.

The most hideous travel experience of my life, 25 hours on a coach! 😩

Most enjoyable holiday for me was my three weeks in Australia three years again which I intend to do in 2023 but for longer and the week I had in New York which I loved.

Not well travelled I guess but I love Cornwall and Sourh Wales and Yorkshire so much I don’t feel the pull to far away places except Aussie.

I do fancy Sweden at some point, probably the only European destination that appeals to me that I haven’t visited.

I also fancy Alaska as well.

We went to Lido di Jesolo in 1965 Malgrat de Mar in 1967, and Mojacar in 1990. All of these places were relatively quiet, the milk at Malgrat was delivered by a herd of goats and Mojacar sea front had just had footpaths and street lights installed. We rarely go anywhere twice, Jersey and Margate the only exceptions, and it's sad to see on Google earth how these places have grown and are now full of noisy smelly families.
You can see why Wordsworth didn't want tourists in the Lakes, most people are an eyesore, only interested in drinking and women, Blackpool and Benidorm are the places for those Neanderthals, they should keep away from heritage site's as they don't appreciate them.
Imagine looking at Stonehenge and seeing Mosha sprayed on it.
    Philistines they are.

Blimey, that takes me back a bit with the mention of Lydd Airport Mick. Don't know whether you are aware but it's claim to fame was that he it flew planes carrying cars in bygone years. It was operated by a company called called Silver City. The planes's nosecone used to open up and the cars were driven onboard for the short flight to Le Touquet. I think that it ceased trading in the early sixties but the memory of seeing cars driving onto a plane still lingers.

I'm with you on Australia. Had a superb trip there in 2012 and would love to go back. It started when I looked at a trip by Kuoni but thought that it was expensive. I did a lot of research and decided that I could book all the places that the Kuoni tour went to myself. I managed to save myself nearly £4k doing it this way. Managed to take in the likes of Perth, Darwin, Cairns, Hamilton Island, Sydney and Melbourne. I still would like to go to New Zealand but fear that my long haul trips could be beyond my ageing years now. I can still dream though.

The planes we first flew to the costas on were old Dakota types. Four prop engines. It took four hours to Spain and you got lots of air pockets when climbing.
We flew to Spain on a Friday night in 1967 from Manston airport. A few weeks before a same type of plane from the same travel company, flying to the same location hit a mountain in the Pyrenees with no survivor's.
