Should we have won the title?

When you look at it, we are 12 points off 1st going into the final match of the season.

We threw away 6 points vs Woking and Halifax early on.

We threw away 4 points vs Halifax and Torquay at home vs 10 men.

We threw away 2 points away at Wealdstone

    the list goes on.

I guess its the same for any club, but it feels like we should of been closer.

Statman ( Sorry can't remember your username ) if you have the xG from these games can you put them in? or even just a summary of how many games we dropped points in when on xG we should of have won?

This. I'm sure Wrexham will feel they should have had 3 points off us at their ground. Both them and Stockport will look at dropped points in many games and say they should have had more.

We've also picked up points where we maybe didn't deserve it.

If we finish on 82 points, that's a respectable, if not spectacular return, in comparison to the resources that Stockport and Wrexham have. We definitely have the squad to have finished 3rd, that's where we've fallen short.

    Absolutely yes..
Wrexham we’re behind us for a large part.
We have nothing to fear from any team
It’s just been an inconsistency that’s set in
So nothing but top spot should of been expected from me.
We have good enough players that have taken on a soft under belly

    is the right answer

I wouldn't go as far as to say we should've won it, but we have been profligate and at least 3rd was there for us. We had the talent to be top 3. The final table will probably show how close we were and it'll be obvious that we gifted Halifax and Solihull better play-off places

I won't moan about the play-off semi if we make it....
The last one, we could have overturned Torquay in a two-legged tie. But it isn't the EFL play-off format. The NL format is fairer and everyone seems to support it.
Home advantage is real, so the point is to make the top 3. If we go down by the odd goal at Wrexham say, that won't be the problem (we could've taken it in a 2nd leg), the problem will be finishing 5th in the first place.

Agreed, 3rd for me should have been where we we aiming for, but unfortunately, we fell short.

The bottom line is you will always struggle to win a league with the kind of performances we regularly put in away from home. That, as well as our soft underbelly!

These are the games in order of play this season so you can easily cross reference but to make it easier here's the home and away breakdown . . .

I also looked at the xG difference for the top 8 for the last 6 games to see who is creating the highest xG for the run in and play-off's . . .

Remember these are the xG difference, the xG version of actual goal difference.

You can of course see the xG for every game in question by finding the relevant match report here . . .

I was looking at this with my youngest a couple of days ago. Trying to be as objective as possible, it wasn't difficult to highlight particular games where we could have gained more points and of course where we should have. In essence, we concluded that we should have taken it down to the wire, and so ought to be heading into the last game with the possibility of winning the title.

Yes, if we had stopped this rotating lark, and not playing our strongest team.
