Well we won and it was a good workout. That’s the positives from today.

Performance wise there was nothing to suggest we are going to be any better than we were last season though. We are toothless, especially without KvV, have nothing in the way of flair and are just awful to watch.

Unless we somehow manage to carry the amount of sheer luck that we got last season then this team is going to seriously struggle this year.

Well we definitely tried to play more football less aimless hoofball, though there were still a couple of speculative punts. The moves which saw Tierney fail to convert in front of goal and then shoot over late on, for example, were excellent.

The lack of cutting edge/outlet without KVV is stark though and it appears we're playing the full backs the same way as last season - tucking in to crowd the centre and leaving them largely alone if they do have to go out wide. I can't see that not being a problem (again).

If this was the first of three or four pre-season friendlies you'd probably be quite content and hope we can iron out a few things and get sharper prior to business commencing. But five days out from a massive game it's a little concerning.

GA took a gamble on how he recruited and treated the LC last year and - by hook or by crook - can claim he got it right. He'd better know what he's doing again this season or the knives will be out for him before August!
