Simpson wants 2 more to arrive in time for the start of the League Two season, which would make 27 on full time professional wages. One of them will be a senior goalkeeper. We know that the optimum full time professional squad size is 23 as it was when in his original time at the club a squad of 23 became League Two and Lancashire League champions in the same season. The Lancashire League at the time consisted of Premiership / Championship 3rd teams and League 1 / League 2 reserve teams.

Simpson must want 4 of the eventual 27 full time professional players to leave.

With a professional squad of 23 we need a reserve team playing in an open age league. The reserve league that I have in mind plays matches on Tuesday / Wednesday afternoons. Our reserve team would consist of the 5 not in the last first team 18 plus the unused / least used substitutes and fill out that reserve squad of 15 players with the eldest / best of the youth team. It is an opportunity for these youths to be 'up against it' a good test of willpower.
