    Social Media.

Ironic I suppose that I should be posing this question through said media.

On balance I feel that this medium does more harm than good.

The latest troubles in Leicester seem to have been greatly stoked by keyboard warriors for example.

I think back to 20 years ago before FB and WhatsApp and all of the rest of these things and think of better times.

Even texting has had a negative effect.

Too easy to write harsh words and cause grief, most people are quick to write stuff they’d never dare say face to face.

I’d much rather go back to pre 2000 if I could.

I don't really count Whatsap as social media. For me its just a way of sending photos for free. Would not consider getting involved with Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. From what I have seen of it, it is full of inane bulls*it and stupid girls taking selfies of themselves pouting and trying to look attractive when in my opinion they look downright foolish.

I think about growing up in Dublin in the early 70's and look at the media today and I much prefer today. Other then here and one other fairly small site like this one, I am not on anything else.
But I think its brilliant that you can find information out yourself without relying on someone else for it. As i said before, if it was only YouTube that was on the internet it would be worth it as it brilliant.
Regarding people not been able to cope with the social side of the platforms it's still transitory is new tech. People will have to find there own level around social sites.

What I always thought interesting was that right at the very beginning, when those involved first mooted the idea of what became known as the internet in the late 60s / early 70s they recognized the duality of the system. They wanted to create something where knowledge could be shared freely online and be far more accessible (no more trawling through libraries for example) but were keenly aware of the potential for it to be mis-used for propaganda purposes as an example. This raised the question of free speech v levels of policing.

This duality has always been there, but the altruism of the early years (Google's original motto was famously "don't do harm") and over all benefits has slowly been eroded by those using the system to spread mis-information, hatred, scams, propaganda, trolling etc. Social Media-and the over-reliance and addiction to it (The hit of dopamine that many get simply by giving or getting a "like" leading to a mass of inane posts)- is much to blame and is eroding social/communication skills, especially amongst younger generations.

Don't post any personal things on Facebook as it's s hite and too many idiots. Don't get why people post personal photos apart from their own personal gratification. For example there's a mum we know whose daughter goes to a top ballet school so she sends all photos out of her daughter to await the replies - oh she's fantastic - oh she's gorgeous - what a star - she will fly high etc etc! What a load of bollox!

    Just don't get it!!!

Agreed! Although Messenger and WhatsApp can be useful for contacting family /friends I tend to stay well away from other aspects of social media for much the same reasons (plus I'm enough of a ludite/technophobe as it is&#128512

I think forums can be different and -maybe it's an age thing?- I've always found that you initially join over discussions over a common interest but off topic conversations can be equally enjoyable and informative. There will always be the odd disagreement but, over -all, my experience -both on this site and a car site I joined-has been that you build up cyber relations and the vast majority of posters are both supportive and helpful.

My profile on FB is private and only for the few friends and family I allow.

I post a few kiddie and baby photos because our family is extended and they hardly ever see our young ones.

I turned off public viewing a while ago.

I hate the parents and grandparents who constantly “big up” their kids supposed abilities etc, I have a cousin who farms out her daughter’s care to her elderly parents ( because she’s too busy out and about with her new bloke ) and then she posts pictures of her daughter telling us all how “amazing” she is!!

I’m so lucky to have three such cute grandchildren.

They are the best part of my life without question.
