The Bank of England had to step in today and take emergency action, something that it only does in times of disaster that threaten the economy. Two global events come to mind; the pandemic and the worldwide financial meltdown in 2008, both times when the BoE stepped in. So, the new Tory Government and its financial policy is officially a disaster.

Newsnight contacted Downing Street to put up a Minister for tonight's programme. There was no chance. There is nothing to stop any back bench Tory MP accepting an offer to appear on the programme in the studio, at his / her London flat or from home. But none would accept.

Normally an MP from Hicksville will seize the opportunity no matter what the context. But there's f­uck all chance of seeing any current Tory MP in the current circumstances.

There can be no leadership contest until next July. At that time if there are 54 Letters from Tory MPs to Sir Graham Brady then a contest is on. Thus stand the rules of the 1922 Committee. It is clear that Brady has already received some Letters and the 1922 Committee can change its rules.
