Thread: What actually is our style of play

What actually is our style of play

Was thinking about this after last night’s game and whilst pressing is an element of it not sure JM has settled on how we play when we have the ball as it seems to change a fair bit.

Maybe yesterday was due to lack of confidence and how the game panned out but under Bielsa there was an obvious style of play under Marsch maybe not so much.

The tactics are shocking & have been for a while & why bother with naming 5 subs !

Yet again a totally UNBALANCED team selection - very naive starting choices all down to the Coach who is struggling to identify squads individuals natural strengths.

When we get possession of the ball with this predictable robotic 'high pressing' game plan our set-up is so 'narrow' that there's NO wide space to progress a counter attack into. Our creative players are being wasted via this rigid 'envelope system' that JM's trying to enforce.

Feel for our travelling support & we ALL deserve better as JM's reluctance to learn about the importance of flexibility within PL game play won't see his present tight tactical set-up progress and worryingly suggests he ain't gonna win the Leeds crowd over for sure.

The Cowboy is utterly useless and needs to leave now.

Our style of play seems to be a mixture of mediocre capitulation combined with a 'let's pretend we are good enough to play total football' (which we clearly are not) and a blind faith in selecting the same inept players time and time again without even trying the alternatives sat on the bench.

Old saying was always play your strongest team.

I personally today cannot honestly name presently our strongest starting 11 ?

But certainly would try to accommodate players in a 'modern' 4-3-3 for starters !

Mo Salah referenced his Liverpool position recently on the right of a front three but you cannot call him a winger as he seldom touches the touchline as he points out the positions have to be fluid in a modern 4-3-3.

Fact is - formations are seldom rigid so it’s more a case of a 'nominal shape' rather than a standard one enforced as we're seeing presently at Leeds under JM.

When I used to sit behind the stats match reporter at ER I could only really be sure of teams set-up's by taking note of the team shape when there was a goal kick as most players reverted to their 'factory-settings'.

You may be right but, by any metric known to man, there is no way Firpo would qualify for our "strongest team". If performances and results were going well then the Cowboy could legitimately claim that he knows what he's doing. If, however, we are embarrassed against one of the poorest teams in the League (without their best player) and we cannot even hit the target or look threatening from a set piece then surely something has to change. Marsch seems to be as stubborn as Bielsa without any of the other redeeming qualities. I am also perplexed by the constant talk of Harrison being offered a massive pay rise to ensure he stays with us but, looking at his performances of late, why bother?

As you Brits say "it's simples". There is no style of play.

Let's just get the suspense over with and move on.

    Not sure

Some of the decent managers have already been snapped up - Potter being a good example - and Villa also now in the market for a new manager. Pochettino is an obvious replacement - given he is a Bielsa disciple but with more modern flexibility - but Villa will probably snap him up by the weekend.

If HM goes the must be question marks over Orta not for his signings but due to his role in getting Bielsa sacked and tying his colours so closely to the JM is the future mast.

Not sure Radz is that invested as probably looking to sell up to the 49ers and didn’t invest in the summer.

Not sure how many of you would’ve stomached watching Chelsea v Man United, but both managers/coaches made significant changes to their formations on the fly (Potter in particular) that I’m not convinced that we would either try or, even if we did, could pull off at the moment.

They both have “next level” players available, but their proactive/reactive approach is what is needed when your starting strategy isn’t paying dividends.

Easy to say, but not straightforward to do.

Fulham aren’t the bunch of patsies we think they are, although keeping Mitrovic at bay will go a long way to making our life easier on the pitch.

    Again, easier said than done?
