Rules on progressing in the world cup in the event of a tie?

Heard this on Heart Radio this morning on my way home after the drama of Messi missing his penalty last night. Apparently, in the event of a tie, with both teams on the same points, the team to progress in the competition is the one with the better goal difference . Fair enough, but if both teams have the same GD, the one that goes through is the one with fewer red/yellow cards against them. If both teams have the same disciplinary record however, the one that goes through is decided not by a replay but by the toss of a coin. Is this really correct?

Yes!! Success on the toss of a coin hardly fits in with the idea of a "competition" does it? So who made this rule up? Never heard of this before but maybe it applied to previous world cups too but was never disclosed simply because the situation never occurred?

Apparently if everything is tied it is the drawing of lots to decide the winner or a progression ie Drawing lots is basically putting the names of the teams into a bowl and picking a lucky winner randomly. This was last used in 1954 World Cup when Spain and Turkey were tied and Turkeys named ball was drawn from the bowl

    Thanks, wasn't aware of this👍.
I get why you would want to avoid playing further matches whenever possible in competitions but in these circumstances it seems a better option than tossing a coin or drawing lots to decide who goes through or not as the result is purely then based on luck.

They out to make every player strip off and measure which team’s player has the biggest knob!
