O/T Do you think somebody’s been too greedy.(NHS)

A multi-million pound fraud investigation has begun at Wales' largest health board.
Specialist investigators have been called in to Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board after auditors discovered at least £122m was allegedly not properly accounted for.
Audit Wales is also conducting a "high level review of board effectiveness" to understand what went wrong and how.
The Welsh government said it was unable to comment on an active investigation.
Issues were first uncovered earlier in the year when auditors found a number of "significant errors" in the health board's account for the 2021-22 financial year.
They allegedly found there was £72m of unpaid invoices and bills listed in the accounts, but could not find evidence that they existed.

To be honest I would be more surprised if somebody told me it wasn’t happening

Why waiting for my comments? No idea what's happened but I would guess that as the others said that where there is a huge amount of money and poor management systems, someone's been on the take big time. Not sure why that should be a big issue though cos its the NHS? Are you wanting me to defend the NHS on some kind of principle? It might surprise you to know that I don't have any dogmatic view on the NHS or any so called nationalised or privatised service. The only thing that matters is what model gives the best service and value for tax payer's money?

I certainly believe that traditionally public services have a lot to learn from private companies on effective management, probably as profitability is more closely guarded and systems are tighter, but that's only a general suspicion. I think it less likely that such a crime, if that's what this was, would happen in even a large private company, but that's not to say that excellent management systems can't be implemented in public systems to prevent something like this happening.

More broadly, if someone can point to where there is solid evidence of a better model for a national health organisation, one that doesn't just make health care only available for those that can afford it,then I'd be interested to read it. The privatisation of the rail companies, if we are to follow a privatisation model for the NHS doesn't fill me with much confidence. The public seem to pay more for it, but it seems more goes to shareholders. And service in most cases doesn't seem either better, but certainly more expensive! But always worth looking for new ideas
