    On this day

In 1973 Jeff Astle come on as sub and scored his last goal for Albion an equaliser in the 2-2 with Bristol City.
Also my Dad would have been 102 today. Like Astle a Nottinghamshire lad.

A poignant landmark yesterday Lloyd, half a century since the King's final goal for the Albion. One of many. Respects to your dad's memory on what would have been his birthday 😎 .

It's hard to believe it's 50 years since I last saw him play. Another we got rid of too early. Don Howe preferred Gould.
Astle was was only about 30 at the time, injuries had taken their toll but imagine him being turned loose in the second division where we ended up the following season.
Two regrets I have is that neither my dad or Jeff saw us return to the top flight.
Jeff missed it by a matter of weeks.

I should say return to the top flight in 2002.
